Best AI Visibility Tools for SaaS: An Honest Review

Every SaaS founder asks the same question in 2026: which AI visibility tool should I buy. I have been asked it in Slack threads, on calls, in DMs, and over one fairly painful dinner. The honest answer is uncomfortable for the vendors selling these tools. Most of them are lightly wrapped API calls around ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, dressed up in a dashboard, priced at enterprise rates.

Here is the core of my argument. These tools do the obvious diagnosis part. They tell you where you rank, which prompts you miss, which URLs get cited. That is useful. What they do not do is the actual fix. The fix is strategic. It requires understanding your positioning, your product launches, your category, your competitors at a level the tool has no access to. They charge a premium for the easy part and leave you to do the hard part yourself.

There is a second reason my position has hardened in 2026. We can now use AI ourselves for our own work. Claude Code, Claude co-work, OpenAI APIs directly. The power in these tools is not the wrapper. It is your data and your specific use cases, which are proprietary. A prompt-tracking vendor cannot understand your new product launch. They cannot understand your positioning shift. They cannot understand why the AI is not citing you on the three queries that actually close deals. You can. So why rent the wrapper?

Caveat before the pitchforks come out. If you are small, buying one makes sense because it is not expensive at that scale. But it is about HOW you use it. Buying access to a small amount of data you could obtain for 100x less, through a dashboard you barely open, is not a win. The whole point of this data is to make implementations based on it: we are not getting cited here, why are we not getting cited, what changes. That work does not happen inside the dashboard.

I run EMGI Group, a SaaS link building and GEO agency. We measure AI visibility for clients every week. We looked hard at this category before deciding what to use, and the conclusion was that we did not need to pay for any of it. We built our own tracker using Google Apps Script and the OpenAI API, over a weekend, for the cost of some tokens.

This is a listicle with attitude, not an affiliate roundup. I am not affiliated with any vendor in this article. I have not used most of these tools in production. What follows is a qualitative, opinionated read on the category based on public claims, pricing and positioning, with one unconditional recommendation, a clear build-or-buy framework, and a DIY build guide at the end. The bottom line

  • Most AI visibility tools are overpriced API wrappers. Measuring AI visibility matters. Paying $99 to $500 a month for someone else’s dashboard does not.
  • Under $1M ARR: don’t buy, build or defer. Google Apps Script plus the OpenAI API gets you 80% of the functionality in a weekend of engineering.
  • Over $1M ARR: not a meaningful line item, pick one that matches your stack, but know exactly what you are paying for.
  • The one unconditional recommendation is Troof (troof.ai) for SaaS brands with a reputation problem showing up in LLM answers. Troof actually diagnoses and helps fix, not just report.

What AI visibility tools actually do

Strip away the marketing and every tool in this category does the same three things. One, it calls an LLM API (OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, Google) with a list of prompts you give it. Two, it parses the response to check whether your brand appears, what rank it holds, and which URLs were cited as sources. Three, it writes the results to a dashboard, tracks them over time, and compares you against named competitors.

That is the entire product category. The differences between Profound, Peec AI, Otterly, AthenaHQ and the others come down to prompt volume, surface coverage, freshness cadence, UI polish and pricing tier. The engineering lift on the vendor side is real but not exotic. A competent developer with API access could ship a functional version in a week.

The surfaces they cover

Surface coverage is the single biggest price lever in this category. ChatGPT-only monitoring is cheap. Adding Perplexity, Gemini, Claude, Copilot and Grok scales cost linearly. Adding Google AI Overviews costs a premium because scraping Google SERPs at volume is harder and riskier than calling an LLM API.

Most tools cover three to seven surfaces. ChatGPT and Perplexity are table stakes. Google AIO is the premium add-on. If a tool advertises “full AI search coverage” at $29 a month, check the fine print. You are almost certainly getting ChatGPT only with maybe Perplexity bolted on.

What they report

Expect four reporting primitives from any tool worth paying for. First, prompt-level brand appearance: does your brand get named for this exact prompt, yes or no, and at what rank. Second, citation source tracking: which URLs the LLM quoted as sources when answering. Third, share of voice against named competitors. Fourth, trend over time.

Some tools add sentiment and hallucination detection. Useful in principle, often noisy in practice. Hallucination flags in particular are a work in progress across every vendor I have looked at.

Why most SaaS shouldn’t buy one of these tools

Before I get to the tools, let me argue you out of buying anything. Measuring AI visibility is essential. Paying a vendor for the measurement is optional, and for most SaaS it is wasted money. Here is the logic.

The data behind the category is narrower than it looks

Our CRM and directory research across 150 SaaS brands (publishing soon from EMGI) found a Google AI Overview to ChatGPT citation correlation of 0.94. The two systems draw from the same underlying authority pool. Review count correlates with AI citations at 0.86. Gartner Peer Insights is the single strongest directory predictor of LLM visibility. Software Reviews and Crozdesk lift citations meaningfully.

What that means in practice: if you are cited in ChatGPT, you are almost certainly cited in Google AIO too, and the underlying drivers are authority signals, directory presence and review count, not tool selection. Buying a fancy tracker tells you where you are invisible. It does not tell you why, and it does not fix it.

Prompt volume at early stage does not justify the spend

Most SaaS brands under $1M ARR have maybe 20 to 40 prompts that genuinely matter. Your category terms. Your comparison queries against two or three named competitors. A handful of vertical variations. That is it. Running 30 prompts weekly through the OpenAI API costs pennies. Paying $99 a month to have a dashboard show you the same data is a tax on engineering inertia.

No tool does the hard work

This is the core of my argument, so read this slowly. Yes, these tools give recommendations. Yes, they diagnose at a surface level. It is not that they do nothing. The problem is what they do is the easy bit. Telling you that you are absent from ChatGPT for “best CRM for field service teams” is a five-line script. Telling you that you need 18 more Gartner reviews, three comparison pages indexed on Software Advice, and brand mentions in five authority publications, that is work. Telling you WHY you are not cited, and what strategic move fixes it, is the job none of them do well.

I get why the category exists. Measurement is a legitimate pain. I just think the pricing is out of step with the engineering lift, the diagnosis is shallow, and the positioning assumes the tool is a solution when it is really just a rearview mirror. The actual use case is: “we are not getting cited on this query, why, and what do we change.” That is the conversation these tools cannot have with you.

The build, buy, or defer framework

This is how I think about the decision. Three tiers, one clear recommendation per tier, no ambiguity. Run your SaaS through this filter before opening any vendor website.

The three-tier decision matrix

Tier 1: Under $1M ARR (defer or build)

Do not buy a paid AI visibility tool. Your prompt volume does not justify the spend. You probably do not have a dedicated SEO or content owner who will act on the data. Build your own tracker using Google Apps Script plus the OpenAI API over a weekend, or run 30 prompts manually through ChatGPT every Monday morning. Either is better than a $99 dashboard gathering dust.

Tier 2: $1M to $10M ARR (buy if it matches your stack)

At this stage, a $99 to $499 a month spend is not a meaningful line item, and buying saves engineering time. Pick the tool whose pricing, surface coverage and export options match how your team already works. If you are SE Ranking, use their AI module. If you are stack-agnostic, Peec AI or Profound are the two defensible options. Do not overbuy. The dashboard is not the strategy.

Tier 3: Over $10M ARR or Series B+ (buy and also build)

Buy the enterprise tool for audit trails, exec reporting and stakeholder visibility. Build internal tracking for the 200+ prompts that matter most to your team. The two serve different audiences. Profound is the default at this tier because it scales and the API access is genuine. Budget $6,000 to $30,000 a year for the tool. Budget more for the human who reads the dashboards and acts on them.

If you are pre Series A, a spreadsheet and twenty minutes every Monday beats a $99 a month tool. Buy the tool when you have someone paid to look at it, and paid to act on what it says.

The tools, organised by “best for”

I have organised these as categorical recommendations, not a ranked 1 to 12 list. Ranking tools I have not personally used in production would be dishonest. What I can do is tell you which tool each vendor claims to be best for, flag where the positioning holds up under scrutiny, and name the honest caveat. No star ratings. No scores out of 10. No affiliate links.

Pricing in this category changes monthly. The numbers below are accurate as of April 2026, in USD, based on public vendor pricing pages. Custom pricing means “book a demo and we will negotiate based on how much we think we can extract from you”. That is fine. Know it is happening.

Best for reputation management: Troof (troof.ai)

Best for ChatGPT tracking at scale: Profound

Positioning. First to market, enterprise-focused, API-first. The tool most VC-backed SaaS teams end up buying by default when they reach Series B and someone in the boardroom asks “what are we doing about AI search”.

Budget option, fine on price

Positioning. European-built, priced for mid-market SaaS, strong EU data coverage. I see Peec come up regularly in founder conversations. It is the budget option in the category, and it is fine on price.

Verdict: Good pick if you just need prompt tracking at low cost.

Best freemium for early-stage founders: Otterly.AI

Budget entry point

Positioning. Cheap, freemium-friendly, limited prompt volume. The tool founders try first before either graduating to Peec AI or giving up and building their own.

Where it falls short. At the standard tier ($189), you are paying more than Peec AI’s starter for less surface coverage. The pricing cliff from lite to standard is steep.

Verdict: Fine for a first look. Bad value at the $189 tier. Build your own instead at that price point.

Best alternative to Profound: AthenaHQ

The AIO tracking reality

Positioning. Every tool in this list claims to track Google AI Overviews. Most do it badly. AIO is harder to scrape reliably than LLM APIs, AI Overviews change per location and per user, and coverage is inconsistent by query type.

Profound and Peec AI do AIO tracking credibly at their enterprise tiers. Everyone else should be treated with skepticism until you have seen the data. If AIO tracking is your primary need, assume you are paying premium pricing and still getting patchy coverage. Combine paid tracking with manual spot-checks against your top 10 AIO-triggering queries. That hybrid beats trusting any tool alone.

Verdict: No tool is great at AIO tracking in 2026. Expect to supplement whatever you buy with manual audits.

DIY alternative: Apps Script + OpenAI API (the option I actually use)

Google Apps Script + OpenAI API

Positioning. Google Sheets as the interface, Google Apps Script as the glue, the OpenAI API as the engine. Total cost: token usage (pennies per prompt) plus one weekend of engineering time. Start with an OpenAI API key, because the majority of AI search still happens in ChatGPT. That is where you start.

$0 setup. Roughly $5 to check 100 prompts. A tiny fraction of paid tool costs.

The economics. $5 to check 100 prompts. Read that again. Compare it to $99 a month for the same data volume through a Peec AI starter tier. That is the delta. At reasonable prompt volumes you are spending less in a year than a single month of a paid tool.

Why this wins under $1M ARR. You pay for exactly the prompt volume you need. No dashboard tax. Data lives in a Google Sheet you already control. Integrating with Looker, Notion, Slack or anything else is trivial. The 80% of functionality that matters is easy to build.

The honest tradeoff. You lose the polished UI. Even an HTML dashboard rendered inside Apps Script will not look as good as a VC-funded frontend. If you are selling AI visibility reports to clients, that is a real downside. For internal tracking, it is fine. For an agency that white-labels reports, you will want to layer a presentation layer on top, or use a tool for the client-facing side while running the cheap version internally.

Verdict: This is what I built. It is what I recommend to every founder under $1M ARR. Full build guide below.

The one tool I genuinely recommend: Troof

I said upfront that most of this category is API wrappers priced at enterprise rates. Troof (troof.ai) is the one exception I would endorse without qualifiers, and the reason is simple: it does the diagnosis AND helps with the fix, to a meaningful extent. The rest of the pack stops at diagnosis.

Every other tool in this list is a visibility tracker. They tell you whether your brand appears, at what rank, and who is cited as a source. Useful data. Not a product I would pay for when I can build the same thing.

Troof is built for reputation management inside LLM answers. That is a distinct problem. LLMs routinely quote outdated pricing, reference acquired products by their old name, cite negative reviews from five years ago, and occasionally invent features your product does not have. A generic tracker shows you as “appearing” and calls it a win. Troof shows you what the LLM is actually saying, surfaces the negative reviews feeding the output, and helps you intervene on them directly.

The reputation angle is why I keep coming back to this one. Our research, publishing soon, shows review count is a strong correlation factor for AI citations at 0.86. Reviews are not a side quest. They are the game. If an LLM is pulling your negative reviews into its answer, your share of voice tracker will miss it entirely. Troof will not.

If you run a SaaS with any meaningful LLM presence and you are not tracking sentiment inside those answers, Troof is worth a conversation. The pricing is custom because the use case is custom. Keep in mind: I have not used it in production against client data. I am endorsing the positioning, the focus, and the quality of the team. The founders are strong entrepreneurs. I expect the product to keep improving meaningfully over the next year.

Build your own: the Apps Script + OpenAI API guide

Here is the build guide I promised. Conceptual level, not full code, because the point is to show you how achievable it is rather than to write you a plugin. Any developer with a Google account and an OpenAI API key can follow this in a weekend. If you cannot follow it, that is also a useful signal: you probably do not have the technical capacity on your team to act on AI visibility data right now, so defer the whole investment until you do.

What you need

  • A Google account (for Google Sheets and Apps Script access)
  • An OpenAI API key (Anthropic, Perplexity, Gemini all work too, OpenAI is the easiest to start with)
  • A list of 20 to 40 priority prompts your buyers actually run
  • A list of your brand name variations and your top three to five named competitors
  • One weekend

The conceptual build

  1. Create a Google Sheet with four tabs. Tab 1: prompts (the list of queries you want to track). Tab 2: results (one row per prompt per run, with timestamp, prompt, response, brand mention yes/no, competitor mentions, citation URLs). Tab 3: brand and competitor list. Tab 4: summary charts.
  2. Open Apps Script from the Sheet. Extensions menu, then Apps Script. This gives you a JavaScript environment that can run on a schedule and read/write to your Sheet natively.
  3. Write a function that reads a prompt from Tab 1, calls the OpenAI API with that prompt, and returns the response. The OpenAI documentation has example code. One function, maybe 30 lines of code. Use the GPT-4 or GPT-5 API with web search enabled where available.
  4. Parse the response for your brand and competitor names. Simple string matching works for 90% of cases. Use regex if your brand name has variations. Flag whether each was mentioned, and extract any URLs cited as sources.
  5. Write the parsed result as a row in Tab 2. Timestamp, prompt, model, raw response, brand yes/no, competitor mentions, citation URLs. Apps Script has native Sheet write methods.
  6. Set the function to run on a weekly schedule. Apps Script has built-in triggers. Set it to run every Monday at 9 am. Loop through every prompt in Tab 1.
  7. Build a summary view in Tab 4. Pivot table of brand appearance rate by week, competitor share of voice, top citation sources. Google Sheets does this natively. No charting library needed.

That is the build. At moderate prompt volume (40 prompts, weekly), you are spending pennies in API tokens per week. The output is a living dashboard of your AI visibility, scoped to exactly the prompts that matter to your business, owned by you, exportable anywhere, and extendable as needed.

What this does and does not give you

What you get. Prompt-level brand mention tracking. Competitor share of voice. Citation source tracking. Trend data over time. Full data ownership. Total cost under $30 a month at realistic volume.

What you lose. Polished UI. Pre-built competitor benchmarking against thousands of brands. Sentiment and hallucination detection (doable but adds engineering time). Client-facing branded reports.

For 90% of SaaS teams, the loss column is cosmetic. For agencies serving SaaS clients, the loss column is real (client-facing branded dashboards matter), but even then the agency should build the internal version first and white-label a view later.

Tool vendors wrap an API. You can wrap the same API for a fraction of the cost with a weekend of engineering. That is the whole category in one sentence.

What our research says about AI visibility (coming soon)

Here is the most useful thing I can share about this category, and it has nothing to do with the tools. At EMGI we ran research across 150 SaaS brands looking at the actual drivers of LLM visibility. The study publishes soon. The headlines are worth sharing now because they reframe the entire tool conversation.

Google AIO and ChatGPT citations correlate at 0.94. The two systems draw from the same underlying authority pool. If you win in one, you almost always win in the other. That means paying for separate “ChatGPT tracker” and “AIO tracker” subscriptions is often redundant.

Review count correlates with AI citations at 0.86. Review rating correlates much lower. AI rewards scale, not stars. Every CRM brand in our study with zero ChatGPT citations had fewer than 5,000 directory reviews. Every brand with 10+ citations had at least 25,000. The fix is directory presence and review volume, not a better tracking tool.

Gartner Peer Insights is the single strongest directory predictor of LLM visibility. Software Reviews and Crozdesk lift citations meaningfully. G2 rating is overrated. Higher review count with lower average rating beats lower review count with higher rating.

Category positioning overrides raw volume. Apollo.io sits on 19 directories with 24,730 reviews and still gets zero ChatGPT citations on CRM queries, because Apollo is sales engagement, not CRM. Topical relevance beats directory inclusion. No tool tells you this. Strategy does.

Worst Trustpilot-rated CRMs (HubSpot, Salesforce, Freshworks, Keap) get the MOST ChatGPT citations. Direct contradiction of the “review quality drives citations” assumption. LLMs do not appear to weight Trustpilot as a meaningful source. Full write-up publishes in the next few weeks.

That research is what changed my mind on the tool category. If authority, directory presence and review volume are the drivers, then a dashboard measuring the output is the least interesting part of the workflow. The strategic work is on the input side. Tools sit on the output side, reporting on damage already done or wins already earned.
